Half-way Through the Semester

As the men at Bishop White Seminary complete midterms and enter the month of November, we also mark the half-way point in the fall semester. Fr. Matthew Gamber, S.J., former seminary spiritual director, returned to lead a day retreat at the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center. The retreat occurred on the Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist, and readings from the Gospel of Luke naturally were the subject of reflection throughout the day.

Two recent House Night conferences provided further insight for the human and spiritual formation of the seminarians. Dr. Andrew Haffey, a clinical psychologist who has been involved with priestly formation for many years, spoke on the challenge of sexual integration. His scientific background provided a unique perspective on this crucial developmental task.

In particular, Doctor Haffey is a proponent of "relational celibacy" which encourages developing a  relationship with a friend or mentor with whom a seminarian can be completely honest and accountable.

The following week Monsignor Robert Pearson presented energizing presentation on the spirituality of the diocesan priesthood. Drawing on his 45 years of priesthood as well as his experience as a Rector and Spiritual Director, Msgr. Pearson talked about the joy of priesthood and the challenge of finding spiritual strength in the midst of a busy life of priestly service.

This message of finding spiritual strength in the midst of one’s work is certainly apt as the house prepares for the second half of the semester.
